天禧年号存在五年，其间照例铸造了天禧通宝钱币。由于此钱是为了迎请“财神”赵玄朗而改元铸造的，而民间赋予这位“财神”的富足、祥瑞、正义和勇敢的秉性无形中都集中在了这枚钱币上，所以，天禧通宝堪称当之无愧的财神钱。

钱币在唐代开始有通宝，唐初使用隋五铢，轻而混乱。四年来，为了纠正混乱的货币体系，废除唐高祖，模仿西汉五铢的严格规范，用开元通宝来代替社会上剩下的五泰铢。开元通宝以其适度的规模和合适的名称，对中国货币制度的创新产生了深远的影响。它不仅是唐代的主要货币，也是唐朝以后一千多年的铜币典范。

面文“开元通宝”四字，相传为当时给事中欧阳询所书，而后由于不同时代，不同地区铸造出现了相当多的版别。“開”字“門”的距离较宽，上开口，两脚未与内郭相连，留下相当窄的空间，“井”为升井，离内郭较“門”字的两脚离的远；“元”字首笔较短，第二笔上挑不明显，与后来出现左挑元、右挑元、双挑元及走字底四点不相连，成四撇状，最后一撇连捺，收笔上挑；“寳”字第二笔斜撇，“貝”字两横有到边和不到边之分。相对而言，“元”字的变化数量比其他三字要多。日本方面的学者对开元通宝作出了独特的分类，包括遒劲、容若和彪字等，给出了另一个思路。
